Check out this interesting video
news story on Bill.
Wednesday, May 10, 2006 - Bill Quain,
Ph.D. prepared a celebration dinner for the cast and crew of
ABC’s hit show “Extreme Makeover Home Edition”.
Quain, who is visually handicapped, was recruited by producer
Kathryn Vaughn, after an internet search for “Blind Chefs” brought
up Bill’s website, www.quain.com.
Extreme Makeover builds
houses for people with special needs. This week’s family
has several members who are either blind or visually handicapped.
The show’s producers invited
Quain to be part of the season finale, because his ability
to overcome adversity is an inspiring story line. Despite his
handicap, Bill Quain is an accomplished author and speaker,
as well as the co-creator of “Cooking Without Looking” -
a television cooking show for people with limited vision, sponsored
by Magnifying America. (www.magnifyingamerica.com).
Quain,
the author of 13 books, a college professor, and a sought-after
speaker, is also a former
executive chef. He began losing his eyesight to macular degeneration
at the age of 14. Today, he is completely blind in the center
of his eyes, only able to see around the edges. Despite this
condition, Dr. Quain traveled to Bergenfield, New Jersey, walked
into the newly built kitchen,
and whipped up a meal of Gazpacho soup, Chicken Sticks, Salmon,
Rice Pilaf, and a Pound Cake and Fruit Parfait for dessert.
He served the forty cast members as they put the finishing
touches on the newly built home.
Bill Quain is a graduate of
the hotel schools at Cornell University, and Florida International
University. He received his Ph.D.. from the University of
New Orleans. An entrepreneur at heart, he started his career
early – as
the owner of a small hotel at age 19, and a restaurant at 20.
Before entering academia, he was an executive chef, and a
Food & Beverage
Director.
Bill’s books are top sellers, and widely translated.
He has sold over 2 million copies, and the books appear in
over 20 languages. His latest works are book/DVD/CD combinations.
Like all of his books, these solve big problems. Overcoming
Time Poverty: how to achieve more by working less shows readers
how to create both time and money in their lives. Debit & Credit
Cards 101—a driver’s education course for credit
cards is also a total package. The book/DVD and Interactive
CD combine classroom lectures, great instruction and a variety
of exercises such as game shows to provide a complete learning
experience for high school and college students. According
to Quain, “the average college student has over $3,000
in credit card debt. Our mission is to wipe out that debt,
and to show other students how to avoid it completely.”
Quain
uses his experience as a problem solver to help others. He
knows how to handle a
challenge. For example, when he was unable to get to work by
car (he can’t drive due to poor eyesight) he KAYAKED
to work for over 6 years. To view a television clip about this
